History of Babbacombe Theatre

Then...
The Babbacombe Theatre’s rich history began in 1920 with a humble bandstand. By 1938, the Babbacombe Downs Concert Hall was built, funded by Torquay ratepayers at £8,000, and officially opened on May 27, 1939. Its inaugural summer show, Cabaret Revels, debuted with tickets priced at 3/-, 2/-, and 6d. During WWII, the hall served as a lecture venue for RAF trainees, occasionally hosting performances by ENSA and the RAF Flying Training Command Band. Post-war, the theatre thrived with summer shows, becoming a launchpad for stars like Bruce Forsyth, who headlined in 1955/56. The theatre was saved from closure in 1986 when Colin Matthews took over the venue from the Torbay Council and his vision transformed it into one of the UK’s most successful provincial theatres.
The Theatre Now

Refurbished in 2006, the Babbacombe Theatre continues to delight audiences. With its celebrated in-house productions that run throughout the year, which are still produced and directed by Colin Matthews, the theatre is a cornerstone of entertainment in the region featuring the very best entertainers in the South West and giving a showcase for young local talent.
The pandemic brought challenges, with a 14-month closure in 2020. However, community support, donations, and Arts Council funding ensured its survival. Now in 2025, the venue is welcoming iconic performers like, Jack Dee, Paul Young, Harry Hill, Aled Jones, Jim Davidson, G4, the Queen of London’s West End Kerry Ellis, Police pop legend Stewart Copeland and Tom Ball of Britain’s Got Talent fame, to name just a few.
The theatre champions accessibility, offering disabled facilities, wheelchair spaces, and a loop system. Visitors can enhance their experience with dining options across the road, such as The Babbacombe Inn, where pre-show offers are available.
Bruce Forsyth’s sentiment resonates through every performance at the Babbacombe Theatre, a venue treasured by audiences for its enduring charm and vibrant atmosphere.
